Another feature of the counterweight is that it is now fully integrated into the machine, as opposed to the bolt-on counterweight of the C-series excavators. With this has come greater stability - according to marketing engineer, Rob Jackson, "We now have more stability on every model." He added that this was something C-series machine users wanted when using long boom and stick configurations with heavy attachments.

At the front of the machine, there the bucket curl has been increased to 200°, making it easier to dig trenches with a flat bottom, and to retain more material in the bucket when loading trucks.

The machines ship with either a mechanical or fully hydraulic pin grabber quick hitch, each of which has two locking devices. In the case of the mechanical hitch, the back pin is locked automatically as a new attachment is picked up, while the front is engaged manually with a spanner. However, the rear lock can only be disengaged with a spanner, making it impossible for attachments to be dropped.

In the case of the hydraulic coupler, the manual spanner work is replaced by controls in the cab. This means the operator does not have to get in and out of the machine to secure attachments.
With the US market in mind, the stick also features a bracket for adding a thumb attachment, which can be run from the auxiliary hydraulic circuit.

Inside the cab, the only two pedals are for travel, with the rest of the controls in the joysticks, keeping the floor area as free as possible. There is also a switch to the left of the operator's seat to switch between an excavator and backhoe control pattern. The seat slides, tilts and is fully suspended.
All the D-series machines come with an auto idle control, which drops the engine revs to idle if the controls are not touched for three seconds, cutting down on noise and unnecessary fuel consumption.

New loader
The latest addition to Caterpillar's compact tracked loader range meanwhile is the 259B3 from the B Series-3 range. It is one of the smaller machines in this range, with a width of 66 in (1.68 m), when mounted on narrow tracks. Power comes from a 71 hp (53 kW) engine, and the rated capacity is 1338 kg. The loader features a vertical loading path, which is to say the maximum reach horizontal reach comes at the top of the bucket cycle, making it suitable for duties like truck loading.
Two-speed travel is standard, giving the 259B3 a maximum speed of 8.5 miles/hour (13.7 km/h), and the suspended undercarriage makes for a smoother ride for the operator.

The Case N Series loader/backhoes were honored in both the Aggregates Manager Top 25 Rollouts of 2010 and the Construction Equipment Top 100 Products list. The Case 650L crawler dozer and the Case 400 Series 3 skid-steer loaders also appeared on the Construction Equipment Top 100 Products list.

In its annual recognition of the industry’s most significant product introductions, Construction Equipment selected the Case N Series loader/backhoes based on “a newly designed backhoe; expanded transmission choices; increased breakout forces – front and back; greater lift capacities with the new Power Lift feature; new auxiliary hydraulics; side-lighting package; and, in the cab, enhanced visibility and operator comfort.”

New products included in the publication’s list recognize the top equipment based on advances in technology, new product lines, significant improvements to existing products or a product that increases competition in its field.

The Case 400 Series 3 skid steer loaders include “convincing features that made impressive leaps over their predecessors’ capabilities,” the magazine said. The Case 650L crawler dozer “delivers power in a scaled-down package,” the magazine said.

The Aggregates Manager Top 25 Rollouts of 2010 highlighted the N Series loader/backhoes, citing the machines’ Power Lift feature that delivers superior lift capabilities. The publication’s editors review new products throughout the year and select the most impactful products in each product category, based on productivity, cost savings and other factors.

Deere’s presence in China goes back 30 years, mainly confined to the agricultural equipment sector. In 2008, Deere forayed into the construction equipment sector on entering into a joint venture to own 50% of Xuzhou Xuwa Excavator Machinery Co. Ltd., the leading Chinese manufacturer of construction equipment. With the current facility, Deere will have six manufacturing locations in China, two of which are joint ventures.

Deere’s construction and forestry segment operates in highly competitive North American markets and is seeking to grow its competitive position in other parts of the world, including China, Russia and India. Global competitors of the construction and forestry segment include among others, Caterpillar Inc. (CAT">CAT), CNH Global NV (CNH">CNH) and Kubota Corporation (KUB">KUB).
China is touted as the world's largest and fastest growing market for construction equipment. The infrastructure improvements in the country are triggering the need for construction equipment. China's construction market is forecast to surpass the U.S. market in 2020, which provides immense long-term potential for companies like Deere. Over the 2008-2020 timeframe, China and U.S. are projected to represent around 51% of total growth in construction spending. Further, China & U.S. together will account for 36% of total 2020 construction spending.

Given the above numbers, we appreciate Deere’s expansion plans in China. Further, farm cash receipts are expected to be at record levels in fiscal 2011, which is promising. Given increased global demand for food, shelter and infrastructure, we believe the long- term outlook for Deere remains strong.

However, in the near term, margins are expected to be constrained due to elevated raw material costs and increased R&D costs associated with the new model introductions to meet rigorous global emissions standards. Lingering weakness in European markets also remains a concern.

We thus have a Neutral rating on the stock. The company is allotted a Zacks #3 Rank (short-term Hold recommendation) on the stock.

Fast work cycles with smooth and precise work group functions, operator comfort, reduced noise, good service access and increased reliability and stability are key features of the new excavators, which are built on the same platform. Equipped with cab and bucket, the E45 has an operating weight of 4,634kg and maximum digging depth of 3.3m. Model E50, with the same cab and bucket, has an operating weight of 4,905kg and a maximum digging depth of 3.52m.
The E45 and E50 are powered by four-cylinder Kubota V2403-M-DI-TE38-BC-5 and V2403-M-DI-TE38-BC4 turbo-charged Tier III diesel engines respectively, producing 30.2kW and 35.kW net by SAE J1349 of output power at 2,200prm. This results in breakout forces of 28kN in the dipper arm and 35.1kN at the bucket for the E45 and 30.4kN in the dipper arm and 41.2kN at the bucket for the E50. Lifting capacities are 2,369kg and 2,778kg, respectively, at ground level and at a radius of 3m.
The new Bobcat mini-excavators have an "auto idle" feature as standard to reduce fuel consumption and noise. It can be enabled at the operator's discretion and causes the engine to drop to idle if the excavator functions are not used for a period of four seconds. The engine automatically returns to the pre-set throttle position when the operator moves a joystick or travel function.
Air intake, cooling, exhaust systems and the hydraulic pump and valve are designed for a lower bystander noise level - 95LwA and 96LwA for the E45 and E50 respectively. Operator ear noise level is 79dBA and 81dBA.

Worldwide heavy equipment builder JCB has announced a new seven-member line of New Generation skid steer loaders that will soon be joined with 11 more models. All will be designed and built in Savannah, Ga.
The announced machines, now available, start at 2,600 pounds of vertical lift with the 260 model and include the 280, 300 and 330 wheeled skid steers, along with the 260T, 300T and 320T tracked models. When the model line is complete JCB will offer loaders from 1,300 pounds to 3,500 pounds rated for radial and vertical lift.
The new machines share several features including:
* A tilting cab with increased service access.
* Multifunction joysticks.
* A hydraulic quick hitch.
* Isolated cab that is insulated and pressurized for better driver comfort.

JCB is launching seven new "designed-and-built-in-North America" skid steer loaders, including three track models and four wheeled models in a lineup that is destined to grow to 18 models.
* Heated air-suspension seat with adjustable arm rests.
* O-ring seals for all hydraulic connections.
* A new range of more than 30 JCB attachments.
The New Generation line also features JCB's "PowerBoom" design which uses a single arm, rather than the conventional two-arm skid steer design. Also the new models do not use a torque tube across the back of the machine adding visibility for the driver. Also, the mesh screen has been deleted on cab machines in favor of laminated safety glass.

Increased Productivity
The biggest changes are under the skin. A new EcoDig hydraulic system now utilises three hydraulic pumps to provide the same hydraulic output but at lower engine speeds, itself delivering average fuel savings of up to 15 per cent. Operators are able to select from two working modes, either Eco mode or low flow, to optimise productivity and improve machine control.

A secondary benefit of the three pump design is faster performance of the extradig extending dipper stick, further boosting productivity. The new hydraulic system and lower engine speeds also contribute to a cut in exhaust emissions and a reduction in overall machine noise levels, both inside the cab and externally.

The new backhoes come with the existing EcoRoad options of Smooth Ride System (SRS) and TorqueLock to help boost productivity still further. TorqueLock reduces fuel consumption by up to 25% while increasing speed by up to 10 % and the Smooth Ride System maximises load retention around site for increased productivity and operator comfort.

Power brakes are to be introduced on both 3CX and 4CX models. The system provides proportional braking throughout the pedal travel, providing operators with improved braking and reduced effort.

JCB has also redesigned the pedal box in the backhoe loader cab, with an automotive style position which improves ergonomics. The power brake design ensures that there is full brake pad release when the driver comes off the pedal. This enables operators to better maintain roading speeds and contributes to a further one per cent saving in fuel consumption.

By using the machine's hydraulic system to supply oil for the power brakes, there is no requirement for separate brake reservoirs. This simplifies service and reduces the number of daily checks for the driver.

JCB's EcoLoad package of options add to the enhanced productivity. The return-to-dig feature automatically resets the shovel to dig position, saving time and effort; the transmission disconnect diverts hydraulic power to the loader for faster lifting, while the Hydraulic Speed Control (HSC) gives more tractive effort when loading. In addition, high engine torque at low revs provides excellent pushing and hill climbing performance and limited slip differentials (LSD) provide extra traction in challenging conditions.

A new design and a new cab
The best-selling 3CX and 4CX ranges benefit from a striking redesign, incorporating sharper lines in the counterweight, grille and bonnet, and making best use of JCB's bold new livery. The cab adopts a similar style to the JCB Fastrac, with improved run-off channels to prevent rain water collecting on the roof. The machines also benefit from independently adjustable working lights at the front and rear of the roof, providing improved visibility all around the working area in poor light conditions.

The cab is refreshed internally too, with a move to a black interior in the lower half of the cab, including the seat, which has new material to provide increased comfort and less wear. The pillars and roof lining adopt a lighter grey colour, making the cab feel even more light and spacious.

JCB engineers looked for innovation in every detail in the cab, and have found a new material to cover the redesigned steering wheel, offering improved grip for the driver. There is also a more ergonomically designed spinner knob on the wheel. The backhoes also benefit from new high quality switches, activating consoles which provide excellent light definition. The high quality switches have laser etched images that are clearly backlit, enabling clear visibility of switches at night.

JCB will be taking a lead from the automotive industry with the option of an innovative automatic heated front windscreen on all 3CX and 4CX models later this year. Available in time for winter 2010, the heated windscreen rapidly clears ice and misting in cold conditions, allowing the operator to get to work without delay in the morning.

Attachment Availability
A new combined hammer and bidirectional auxiliary circuit makes the fitting of attachment power circuits easier. The circuit has been designed to provide low flow and high flow across all 3CX and 4CX models, including all fixed and extending dipper variants. This greatly increases versatility for the customer as the machines are compatible with an increased number of optional attachments.
There is also the option of a new 9m hose reel on the Hand Held Tool Circuit, that allows contractors to use hydraulic power tools alongside the backhoe loader, removing the need for separate power packs.

Taking A Break
JCB has always been at the forefront of backhoe loader design and production, leading the world in innovation and machine performance. Yet sometimes it is the small things that matter most to the operator.

In the 1970's JCB took the time to think of the operator first, supplying a kettle as an option with each machine so that the driver could make a hot drink even when away from the site facilities.

Now JCB is to revive this link with the past. All 3CX and 4CX models will be available with an optional hot drinks machine, capable of producing tea or coffee, that will lock securely into an area at the side of the cab. The machine uses the 12V supply directly from the machine and has been designed to fit into the existing cab layout.

Executives at Caterpillar, the world's largest maker of bulldozers, met with employees in Aurora this week to explain that the idea to build a new facility in an as yet unnamed location is preliminary at this point and part of an ongoing analysis.

"We're taking a strategic look and studying the best approach to take long term," said Caterpillar spokesman Jim Dugan. "The excavator business is highly competitive."

About 250 of the 2,300 employees at the Aurora facility work on the hydraulic excavator assembly. The local plant also produces wheel loaders, soil and landfill compactors, wheel dozers and other components.

The company is "contemplating" constructing a free-standing building to assemble the hydraulic excavators. The new Caterpillar plant would house the assembly of the two excavator models currently built in Aurora and additional excavator models now produced in Japan and exported to the United States. The company also makes excavators in Belgium, Brazil, China, France, Indonesia and Russia.
"The thinking behind this is if a focused, stand alone facility in the United States to produce the excavators would be a better approach to take," Dugan said. "If the plan moves forward, three or four years down the road, we'd have a single facility that would produce a wider range of excavators."

Hydraulic excavators are widely used in applications around the world. If finalized and approved, the new U.S.-based factory would be the primary North American source for excavators, the company said. Under this scenario, Caterpillar's Akaski, Japan, excavator facility would have the available capacity needed to better serve customers in the rapidly expanding Asia-Pacific region.
